Pickleball isn’t usually tied to national milestones.
But that’s exactly what’s happening with the launch of the America250 National Pickleball Challenge—a nationwide initiative designed to get players across all 50 states on the court ahead of the country’s 250th birthday.
Led by the National Women’s Pickleball Foundation in partnership with America250, the challenge is designed as a long-term, participatory movement, not a one-time event.
And yes, it’s as simple as it sounds: play pickleball, log your sessions, and help your state climb the leaderboard.

What Is America250?
If you haven’t heard of it yet, you will.
The United States Semiquincentennial marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, with nationwide programming leading up to July 4, 2026.
Think large-scale, multi-year activations across sports, education, culture, and community initiatives—all designed to get people involved, not just watching.
This pickleball challenge is one of those activations—and one of the easiest ways to get involved.
“Pickleball is a multigenerational sport that people from ages 8 to 80 are playing all the time,” said Catherine Barton, President and CEO of the National Women’s Pickleball Foundation, which is leading the America250 Pickleball Challenge. “Where else but on a pickleball court can you have a grandchild, a child, a parent, and a grandparent all playing together? It’s a sport that is uniting the country and building community wherever pickleball is played.”
How the Pickleball Challenge Works
No qualifiers. No barriers. No complicated format.
- Sign up with your basic info
- Play pickleball like you normally would
- Log your sessions on the platform
- Watch your state move up the leaderboard
That’s it.
The leaderboard tracks participation per capita, so smaller states aren’t automatically outmatched. It levels the playing field and creates a real “state vs. state” dynamic.
What Players Get Out of It
No, you’re not chasing prize money.
But there are still a few real incentives:
- Community recognition for high participation
- Potential court and equipment donations
- A built-in reason to stay consistent with play
And honestly, the biggest one is simple: it gives your regular games something extra to play for.
“The goal for the America250 National Pickleball Challenge is to get people playing pickleball all over the United States,” Barton said. “We’re going for the GOLD! Get America playing pickleball—it’s a way to make America healthy.”

Where Empower Pickleball Fits In
Empower Pickleball is helping to tell that story—highlighting the players, communities, and programs driving participation across the country.
That includes:
- Community Spotlights tied to the challenge
- Podcast conversations with organizers and players
- Ongoing editorial coverage as this evolves
Because the leaderboard isn’t really the story. The people behind it are.
What’s Next
Registration is open now, and the challenge runs through 2027 as part of the ongoing Semiquincentennial celebration.
“In these next 20 months, the National Women’s Pickleball Foundation is looking to bring pickleball to every corner of the United States,” Barton said. “We’re building partnerships nationally to encourage people to come out and play pickleball for their health, for socialization, and to stimulate the brain.”
Early participation is already picking up in states like Utah, Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida, with national partners expected to drive further growth.
You can sign up, log your sessions, and start contributing to your state by registering here.
We’ll see you on the courts to celebrate America250.
