A Journey of Resilience, Unity, and Love: Ella and Angie Cosma’s Story

Life has a way of throwing curveballs, but for Ella and Angie Cosma, those challenges test their limits. But through every hurdle, this mother-daughter duo found strength in each other - and in a sport that would bring them closer than ever: pickleball. Their journey is one of perseverance, connection, and the transformative power of family and shared passion.

Overcoming Life’s Toughest Challenges

At just 12 years old, Ella had already endured more than most people do in a lifetime. From the time she was very young, she had struggled with issues with her digestive system, leading to countless hospital stays and multiple surgeries. For a time, even walking for 15 minutes felt impossible. It wasn’t until she received an ileostomy bag that her health began to stabilize. She would later have the bag removed and was finally able to be physically active.

Ella’s mom, Angie, was fighting her own battles. A former collegiate tennis player and marathon runner, Angie was sidelined by an autoimmune disease that drained her energy and forced her to reimagine her active lifestyle.

Through it all, their relationship grew stronger. Together, they navigated the emotional and physical challenges of recovery, leaning on each other for strength and support.

Discovering Pickleball: A New Chapter

In the summer of 2022, Angie and Ella stumbled across a pickleball court near the Sammamish River Trail in Redmond, Washington. Armed with a pair of borrowed wooden paddles and a healthy dose of curiosity, they decided to give the sport a try. What began as a casual outing quickly grew into a life-changing passion. Ella’s family always excelled athletically. Pickleball allowed her to no longer be a spectator but finally a participant.

On the court, Ella’s swift, two-handed backhand complemented Angie’s powerful, strategic play perfectly. But it wasn’t just their skills that clicked—it was the deep connection they shared. Pickleball became more than a game; it became a way for them to bond as teammates and best friends.

A Shared Passion for Growth

As they practiced together, pickleball transformed their relationship and their skills. It wasn’t long before they were making waves in the local pickleball scene. Ella and Angie advanced from casual players to competitive intermediates, earning recognition for their teamwork and determination. The duo refers to their connection on the court as a reflection of their relationship off the court. They work through things together!

Ella’s hard work paid off in 2023 when, at just 14 years old, she made history as the first female Junior Triple Crown winner on the PPA Tour. Competing at the Seattle Open, she swept gold in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Angie was there for every moment, cheering from the sidelines and sharing the joy of her daughter’s success. She recently secured her title with a second Junior Triple Crown win!

Sharing Their Journey with the World

The Cosmas didn’t keep their pickleball journey to themselves. They began sharing their experiences on Instagram through their account, @Ella.Angie.Pickle. Through photos, videos, and posts, they invite others into their world, sharing both their victories and the lessons learned along the way.

Their genuine connection and joy have attracted a growing community of followers. People are inspired by their story, not just for the skill they show on the court but for the love and support that radiates from every match they play.

The Healing Power of Pickleball

Pickleball has been a source of healing for Ella and Angie in so many ways. It’s helped them rebuild their health, deepen their bond, and find joy after years of struggle. The game has also given them a platform to inspire others, proving that it’s never too late to turn challenges into opportunities.

Their story is a reminder of the incredible power of resilience, love and shared passion. Ella and Angie Cosma have shown us that no matter where you start, you can always rise to greatness - with a paddle in hand and someone by your side. Congratulations, Ella and Angie!
