Ukraine Joins the Global Pickleball Federation: A Milestone for the Sport
As an outsider with little first hand knowledge of living inside a war-torn country, I have always been struck by the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian people. Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, we have witnessed their will to not only survive but to truly live. Despite the ongoing war, sports in Ukraine have provided a sense of normalcy, uniting players and fans while offering much-needed distraction and boosting morale.
Since pickleball is a sport that is known for its ability to bring people together, it’s no surprise that it has found a place in Ukraine. Last week, the Global Pickleball Federation (GPF) made an announcement that highlights the sport’s growing presence in the country. Last week, the GPF board unanimously voted to appoint the Ukrainian Pickleball Federation (UPF) as its 60th member, making Ukraine the ninth European nation in the federation.
“We are thrilled to have a deserving organization such as the Ukrainian Pickleball Federation (UPF) become our milestone 60th member. We sincerely hope this affiliation will provide additional support to Ukraine during such a challenging time,” said Steve Sidwell, GPF VP of Membership. “The GPF stands resolutely behind the UPF and its objectives to support pickleball throughout Ukraine. Together, we can show the world the power of sport to elevate above all else, as a force for good!”
Pickleball’s Road to the Olympics
As the world governing body for pickleball, the GPF is dedicated to the global development of the sport, with a long-term vision of securing International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition. The organization’s ethical framework and By-Laws position pickleball for inclusion in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
“To reach that goal, GPF is pursuing a path through an IOC umbrella organization known as AIMS (Alliance of Independent Recognized Members of Sport),” explained Sidwell. “The addition of Ukraine to the Global Pickleball Federation (GPF) membership meets the AIMS requirement of 60 National Federations. This represents a fundamental step toward IOC compliance on pickleball’s Olympic journey!”
Pickleball’s Impact in Ukraine
Despite ongoing challenges, pickleball in Ukraine is thriving. The sport has become a source of joy and resilience, offering adaptive programs for injured veterans, weekly play sessions, and competitive events like the Kyiv Pickleball Open.
"In Ukraine, in spite of the war, we try to do something for people to help them forget about this war, at least for a while” said Ivan Zahorodny, a member of the Ukrainian Pickleball Federation (Polskie Radio, 2/25/25).
A Bright Future for Ukrainian Pickleball
Anna Glotova, UPF Director of Strategic Partnerships, emphasized the significance of this membership:
“The Ukrainian Pickleball Federation (UPF) is honored to join the Global Pickleball Federation and to contribute to the global development of this incredible sport. For Ukraine, joining the GPF is a significant step in strengthening our national pickleball community and integrating with the international pickleball family. This membership provides our players with new opportunities to grow and compete on a global stage, reinforcing our mission to use pickleball as a tool for resilience, rehabilitation, and unity—especially in these challenging times.”
Congratulations to Ukraine and the Global Pickleball Federation! This milestone not only strengthens Ukraine’s national pickleball community but also brings the sport one step closer to its Olympic debut.
