You hear it constantly around pickleball courts.

Someone’s knees are bothering them. Someone else is wiped after three games. Another player says they’re “eating healthy” but still dealing with inflammation, low energy, or nagging recovery issues.

That pattern is exactly what pulled nutrition expert Cara Zaller deeper into the pickleball world.

Cara, owner of FUEL4U, LLC, is joining Empower Pickleball as a contributor focused on nutrition, recovery, and helping everyday players feel better on and off the court. Unlike a lot of wellness content online, her approach is rooted in realistic habits and understanding how the body functions.

From Fitness Instructor to Functional Nutrition Expert

Long before pickleball entered the picture, Cara spent more than two decades teaching fitness classes. During that time, people constantly asked her the same question:

“What do you eat?”

That curiosity led her down a much bigger path.

“I took every available nutrition certification course to learn more,” Cara said.

A turning point came after taking a course taught by chiropractors focused on helping trainers better support clients without causing injury. One of the instructors handed her a copy of The Paleo Diet for Athletes.

“That book changed my view on everything I was taught,” she explained.

From there, Cara earned her Master’s degree in Nutrition at Maryland University of Integrative Health, completed over 1,000 internship hours, and passed her licensing exams to become a certified nutrition specialist and holistic health practitioner.

How Pickleball Connected Cara With the Wellness Needs of Everyday Players

Cara didn’t find pickleball through competition. She found it through community after a neighbor’s friend told her she’d made “80 new friends” through the sport.

“With all three of my kids starting college that year, I thought making new friends would be a good idea,” Cara said. “Working from home while raising them was quite isolating.”

But once she started spending more time around the courts, another pattern became impossible to ignore.

“Everyone I met playing pickleball complained of some ache, pain, or health issue,” she said. “It kept coming up organically.”

As players started asking questions, word quickly spread through local courts and friend groups.

Why Recreational Pickleball Players Often Overlook Nutrition

Ask Cara what everyday athletes get wrong most often, and her answer is immediate.

“100%,” she said when asked if recreational athletes underestimate nutrition compared to exercise.

Many players focus heavily on court time while overlooking recovery and nutrition.

Her biggest piece of advice for pickleball players is to “eat to repair the body and reduce inflammation.”

Cara’s Philosophy on Real Food and Inflammation

Cara’s definition of “real food” is about as straightforward as it gets.

“If you can kill it or grow it, you can eat it.”

That philosophy shapes everything from how she eats personally to how she works with clients.

She’s also willing to challenge some mainstream nutrition talking points. One of the biggest misconceptions she sees is the obsession with calories in versus calories out.

And when it comes to overhyped wellness trends, plant-based eating tops her list.

What Healthy Living Looks Like for Busy Pickleball Players

Cara’s version of a realistic healthy lifestyle for busy adults includes three core things:

  • Meeting daily nutritional needs
  • Including strength training, mobility, and flexibility
  • Moving more and sitting less

That practicality also shows up in how she eats herself.

Before pickleball, she’ll often go with homemade chicken salad. After playing, she gravitates toward meals like turkey meatloaf muffins, vegetable soup, and Japanese sweet potatoes.

And despite what people assume about nutrition professionals, Cara says people are usually most surprised by “how much food I eat every day.”

What Cara Zaller Plans to Cover for Empower Pickleball

Cara plans to focus heavily on the connection between nutrition, inflammation, recovery, energy, and overall health for pickleball players.

Her goal is for readers “to learn how to regain their health from the inside out.”

She’s especially interested in covering how diet impacts nearly every aspect of health and performance, something many recreational athletes don’t fully connect until they start feeling the effects themselves.

And if there’s one philosophy that sums up her overall approach best, it’s probably this:

“Health doesn’t have to be complicated or a burden.”
